July 17, 2025 | Washington, D.C. — On the third day of his official visit to the U.S. capital, Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé intensified his diplomatic outreach, holding a series of high-level meetings with influential members of the U.S. Congress. His mission: to garner stronger international support for Haiti’s fragile security landscape, push for continued protections for Haitian migrants, and reinforce the role of the diaspora in national recovery.
Among those he met were Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), senior Financial Services Committee member Maxine Waters (D-CA), and ranking Foreign Affairs Committee member Gregory Meeks (D-NY). Their conversations centered on key priorities for Haiti, including the urgency of restoring public security, organizing democratic elections, and maintaining humanitarian programs such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals living in the United States.
Prime Minister Fils-Aimé underscored his administration’s political commitment to stabilizing the country and rebuilding democratic institutions. He made a strong appeal for greater U.S. engagement and resources to support Haiti’s transitional process, emphasizing that any viable long-term solution must include protections for Haitian migrants and active involvement from the diaspora.
Later in the day, Fils-Aimé also met with Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL), one of the leading Haitian-American voices in U.S. politics. Their discussion highlighted the shared goal of strengthening democratic governance and ensuring the safety of Haitian citizens amid the nation’s ongoing crisis. Cherfilus-McCormick reaffirmed her dedication to advocating for Haiti’s path toward a more stable and prosperous future.
In a bipartisan effort to build consensus, the Prime Minister also held talks with Congressman Brian Mast (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Their meeting, which took place at the Rayburn House Office Building, focused on Haiti’s security challenges and the critical need to hold transparent and inclusive elections. Congressman Mast expressed his willingness to work with the Haitian Government to support efforts aimed at restoring order and democratic governance.
