New VMA distinction recognizes Swift’s growing body of work behind the camera as she enters this year’s ceremony with 11 nominations

Taylor Swift will add a new distinction to her career when she becomes the inaugural recipient of the MTV VMA Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.
CBS and MTV announced Monday that the 36-year-old singer-songwriter will receive the newly created honor during the September 27 ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The award was established to recognize recording artists whose work as directors has helped advance music videos and visual storytelling.
For Swift, the recognition highlights a part of her career that has steadily expanded beyond songwriting and performing. During the past several years, she has taken an increasingly active role in directing and developing the visual worlds surrounding her music.
From Pop Star to Director
Swift made her solo directing debut with the 2020 video for “The Man,” from her Lover album. The project earned her the VMA for Best Direction that year.
Her ambitions behind the camera became more apparent with “All Too Well: The Short Film,” released in 2021. Written and directed by Swift, the extended film starred Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien and became one of the most prominent visual projects of her career.
At the 2022 VMAs, All Too Well: The Short Film captured three awards: Video of the Year, Best Direction and Best Longform Video.
Swift has subsequently directed a substantial portion of her own visual material, including **“Bejeweled,” “Lavender Haze,” “Karma” featuring Ice Spice, “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault),” “Anti-Hero,” “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone, “Opalite” and “The Fate of Ophelia.”
The Artist Director honor is intended to recognize that sustained body of work rather than a single video.
Four Best Direction Victories
Swift has developed a significant record in the VMAs’ directing category.
She has received seven Best Direction nominations and won four times. Her nominated directorial projects include “The Man,” “Cardigan,” “Willow,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero,” “Fortnight” and “Opalite.”
She already holds 30 VMA Moon Person trophies. Because the Artist Director recognition counts toward her total, the new honor will give Swift 31 VMAs.
Swift Enters 2026 VMAs With 11 Nominations
Swift will have several additional opportunities to expand that collection on September 27.
The original VMA nominations announced in August gave her nine nominations. MTV subsequently introduced additional social categories, increasing her 2026 total to 11 nominations, while Madonna’s total rose to 13.
Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia” is nominated for Video of the Year and several production categories, including Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Choreography and Best Visual Effects. She also received a Best Direction nomination for “Opalite” and an Artist of the Year nomination.
The newly announced social categories added Best Album for The Life of a Showgirl and Song of Summer for “I Knew It, I Knew You,” bringing her overall nomination count to 11.
Other prominent nominees include Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson.
A New Kind of VMA Honor
Unlike competitive categories that recognize an individual release from the eligibility period, the Artist Director Honors was created to acknowledge an artist’s broader contribution to directing.
MTV describes the award as recognizing artists whose behind-the-camera work has expanded what music videos can accomplish and who have developed an identifiable directorial approach over time.
Selecting Swift as its first recipient reflects the growing overlap between recording artists and filmmakers. Music stars increasingly participate not only as performers in videos but as directors, writers and executive creative forces shaping how their work is presented visually.
For Swift, that evolution has been particularly visible since 2020, with elaborate narratives, cinematic production and recurring visual themes becoming central elements of her releases.
VMAs Return to Los Angeles
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will take place Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, marking the ceremony’s return to the West Coast after years of shows in New York and New Jersey.
Snoop Dogg will host the two-hour ceremony. Madonna, this year’s most-nominated artist, is scheduled to open the show in what will be her first VMA performance in 23 years. Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award.
The broadcast begins at 7:30 p.m. Eastern and 4:30 p.m. Pacific on CBS, with a simultaneous broadcast on MTV. Paramount+ Premium subscribers in the United States will also be able to stream the ceremony live, with broader international availability following the next day.
For Swift, however, one award is already assured before the envelopes are opened.
Six years after stepping behind the camera as the sole director of “The Man,” she will arrive at the 2026 VMAs not only as one of the ceremony’s most nominated performers, but as the first artist MTV has chosen to honor specifically for a sustained career directing her own visual work.
