Brazil’s Election Is Driven by Four Fears: Trump, Bolsonaro, Lula and Corruption

Haitian Tribune | October 4, 2026

BRASÍLIA — Brazil’s presidential election is unfolding amid deep political fatigue. Many voters are weighing not only which candidate they support, but which outcome they fear less: another term for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or a return to power for the Bolsonaro family.

Lula, 80, is seeking a fourth, nonconsecutive term. His main challenger is Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, 45, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year sentence after being convicted in connection with a plot to overturn his 2022 election loss. Flávio has said he would seek his father’s release if elected.

Neither candidate is expected to win a majority in Sunday’s first round. If that happens, the two leading candidates will face each other in a runoff scheduled for October 25. A recent poll cited by The Washington Post found that 44 percent of voters feared another Lula term, while 42 percent feared a return of the Bolsonaros.

Concern over U.S. influence

The possibility of U.S. involvement has become one of the campaign’s most contentious issues. Brazilian officials have expressed concern that President Donald Trump’s administration could influence the vote or challenge the credibility of Brazil’s electronic voting system.

Brazilian intelligence reportedly rated the risk of U.S. interference as “critical.” The U.S. State Department has rejected allegations that it is trying to influence the election, calling them baseless. The concerns have grown amid strained relations between Washington and Brasília, including U.S. tariffs and sanctions on Brazilian officials connected to the prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula has warned against foreign interference, saying Brazil’s future must be decided by its voters. Flávio Bolsonaro, who has met with Trump and other U.S. officials, says his family’s relationship with the American president could benefit Brazil, while denying that he is receiving help from the U.S. administration.

Questions about Flávio Bolsonaro

Flávio Bolsonaro is presenting himself as a fresh option for voters dissatisfied with Lula. But some voters question whether he can act independently of his father and whether he has the experience to lead the country.

His record has also drawn scrutiny. He has faced allegations involving ties to a former police officer accused of leading a militia, and he was previously charged in a case alleging that lawmakers’ salaries were improperly diverted. He denied wrongdoing, and prosecutors dropped that case after courts invalidated key evidence. He is also under investigation over allegations that he sought money from a jailed banker to finance a film about his father. Bolsonaro denies the allegations.

Frustration with Lula

Lula’s campaign is confronting voter dissatisfaction with the cost of everyday life. Some voters say food and fuel remain expensive and that the improvement in purchasing power promised by the president has not reached their households.

The president’s political position is also complicated by corruption investigations involving people in his circle, including his son. Lula himself was convicted in corruption cases in the late 2010s, but Brazil’s Supreme Court later annulled the convictions, ruling that the court lacked jurisdiction and that the presiding judge had been biased. Lula denies wrongdoing.

A dispute over the Supreme Court

The country’s Supreme Court has become another focus of political conflict. Conservatives have criticized the court’s actions against Jair Bolsonaro and his allies, arguing that the institution is politically biased. Recent disclosures involving Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and the jailed banker Daniel Vorcaro have intensified scrutiny.

Moraes has denied receiving messages from Vorcaro that were cited in the controversy, and he has described the investigation into him as unconstitutional and politically motivated. The allegations have fueled debate over the court’s independence, while both major political camps face questions about their own relationships with Vorcaro.

An election shaped by distrust

With the race divided and neither candidate inspiring broad enthusiasm, the campaign has centered on risk, identity and distrust. Lula’s supporters warn that a Bolsonaro victory could threaten democratic institutions; Bolsonaro’s supporters argue that Lula’s government has failed to deliver enough economic relief.

The result will shape Brazil’s domestic direction and its relationship with the United States. But whichever candidates advance, the campaign has already exposed how strongly fears of political interference, corruption and economic frustration are influencing voters.
