The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Thursday that TPS for Haitians will now expire on August 3, significantly reducing the protection period initially set to last until February 3, 2026.

Haiti’s Unstable Conditions Previously Warranted TPS
TPS was established under a 1990 law to protect individuals from nations facing severe crises, including armed conflict, natural disasters, and political instability. Haiti has continuously met these conditions due to ongoing crises, including rampant gang violence, economic deterioration, and political upheaval following the assassination of its president in 2021 and the resignation of its prime minister last year. When Mayorkas extended TPS in July 2024, he cited Haiti’s deteriorating security, economic struggles, and health crises as justification.
