Rafah, May 27, 2024 – Israeli tanks have reached the center of Rafah for the first time, defying international calls to halt the offensive on the southern Gaza city. NBC News reported the advance despite widespread outrage over a recent deadly strike on a tent camp.

Tensions are soaring following an Israeli airstrike in Rafah that Palestinian officials say killed 45 civilians, including women and children. This incident comes shortly after the UN’s top court demanded Israel halt specific operations in the area.

Simultaneously, Israeli and Egyptian officials are holding urgent discussions after a rare cross-border clash resulted in the death of an Egyptian officer. Both nations are working to prevent further escalation.

The Israeli strike aimed at two senior Hamas leaders has faced international condemnation. French President Emmanuel Macron labeled the strike an “outrage.” At the same time, EU foreign-policy chief Josep Borrell demanded an immediate halt to Israeli attacks; despite Israel’s claims that the airstrike employed precision-guided warheads, significant civilian casualties were reported by Palestinian health officials.

The U.S. National Security Council recognized Israel’s right to target Hamas but stressed the importance of protecting civilians. The Biden administration has closely monitored Israel’s Rafah operation, pressing for measures to minimize civilian harm.

Amid the conflict, Egypt has threatened to downgrade diplomatic ties with Israel, accusing it of exacerbating tensions. The Egyptian Armed Forces reported that Monday’s border shooting led to the death of an Egyptian security agent. Israeli and Egyptian officials continue to work towards de-escalating the situation and maintaining peace after 45 years of diplomatic relations.
