CAIRO — Egyptian television presenter Sarah Khalifa and 11 other defendants have been sentenced to death by hanging after being convicted in a major drug case involving allegations of trafficking, drug production and illegal possession of weapons.

According to Egypt’s state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper, prosecutors accused the defendants of operating as part of an organized criminal network that imported chemical ingredients used in the production of illegal drugs, with the intention of manufacturing and distributing narcotics.

Authorities also alleged that members of the group possessed firearms and ammunition without authorization.

Khalifa, 39, has denied the accusations against her.

Television Personality Caught in High-Profile Case

Khalifa is known in Egypt for her work in television, particularly the program Mission Impossible, which focused on crime-related subjects.

Her involvement in the case has attracted considerable attention because of her public profile and the contrast between her television work covering crime and the serious criminal allegations brought against her.

The court ultimately convicted Khalifa along with 11 other defendants and imposed capital punishment.

Allegations of Organized Drug Production

According to the prosecution’s case, the group obtained materials from abroad that could be used to manufacture illegal narcotics inside Egypt.

The authorities alleged that the operation was intended to produce drugs for commercial distribution rather than personal consumption.

The case also included weapons-related allegations, with prosecutors accusing members of the group of illegally possessing firearms and ammunition.

Khalifa maintained her innocence and denied participating in the alleged criminal operation.

Death Penalty Cases in Egypt

A death sentence in Egypt does not necessarily mean an execution will immediately follow. Capital cases can proceed through additional judicial procedures, including appeals, depending on the circumstances of the case.

The severity of the sentences makes the case one of the more closely watched Egyptian criminal proceedings involving a prominent media personality.

For Khalifa and the other defendants, the legal process may therefore continue despite the court’s decision.

The case has also drawn renewed attention to Egypt’s strict approach to major narcotics offenses, particularly cases involving allegations of organized trafficking and drug manufacturing.
