AFKF Victorious at ‘Woule Balon

In a climate fraught with uncertainty, the city of “Les Cayes” recently became the stage for an inspiring event: the second edition of the “Woule Balon pou yon Pi Bèl Vil” tournament. Amidst fierce competition and enthusiastic crowds, the Association Fanm Kore Fanmi (AFKF) emerged victorious, offering a powerful symbol of resilience and hope to a new generation.

A Sporting Event as a Platform for Civic Engagement

From April 4 to April 27, 2025, eight teams representing local institutions and organizations — including the Mairie des Cayes, Croix-Rouge, Ecolo Jeune, Immigration, AFKF, Protection Civile, AJPE, and Gardes-Côtes/BLTS, competed in spirited matches in front of the Municipal Administration building.

Spearheaded by the Mairie’s Bureau Socio-Culturel, the tournament sought more than entertainment. It aimed to rebuild social bonds, foster teamwork, and strengthen collaboration between key community actors. In a country like Haiti, where insecurity, economic hardship, and political instability weigh heavily, creating spaces for unity is both a challenge and a vital necessity.

Each match drew lively crowds,  families, curious youth, and elders, eager to witness the next generation’s passion and dignity on display. Throughout the tournament, respect, fair play, and a genuine love of the game were the prevailing themes.

AFKF’s Triumphant Journey to the Title

From the opening matches, AFKF asserted itself as one of the tournament’s most formidable teams. Backed by flawless collective organization, superior fitness, and deep internal solidarity, they dominated the group stages with impressive wins, notably 5-0 victories over both Protection Civile and AJPE.

In the semifinals against a determined Croix-Rouge side, AFKF kept their composure and advanced to the highly anticipated final against AJPE, the surprise of the tournament.

The final proved a thrilling encounter, ending in a 2-2 draw after regular time, showcasing the high level of play on both sides. It was during the penalty shootout that AFKF’s poise shone through, clinching a 3-1 victory and lifting the trophy to thunderous applause.

Special commendations went not only to both teams for their exceptional sportsmanship but especially to the champions. Particular recognition was given to Richkadelin Charles of AFKF for his outstanding efforts as cultural coordinator, contributing significantly to the tournament’s success.

A Strong Message from the Youth of Cayes

Beyond the athletic achievement, AFKF’s victory carries profound meaning. In a city where economic opportunities are scarce and migration often feels like the only option, this win stands as a testament to perseverance and belief in a better future.

“This wasn’t just a football match. It’s proof that we exist, that we believe in the future, and that despite everything, we are ready to fight for our city and our country,” said an emotional AFKF representative after receiving the trophy.

Throughout the tournament, the players’ contagious energy demonstrated that sports can be a powerful tool for civic and social engagement, far beyond mere entertainment.

Local Initiatives with National Impact

The success of “Woule Balon pou yon Pi Bèl Vil” highlights the importance of encouraging similar initiatives across Haiti. In times of crisis, it is essential to create positive spaces where young people can gather, express themselves, and build collective projects.

By offering a framework for peaceful, respectful competition, the Mairie des Cayes sent a strong signal: despite the challenges, it remains possible to dream, to build, and to grow together.

“This isn’t just about football. It’s about dialogue, trust, and solidarity. It’s part of a broader effort toward social reconstruction,” explained Capitano, a leader at the Mairie’s Bureau Socio-Culturel.

The local population, inspired by the event, is now calling for its continuation and expansion to other neighborhoods and cities, laying the foundation for a national movement of renewal through sports and culture.

A Victory for Today, a Commitment for Tomorrow

AFKF’s achievement will not simply be recorded in the city’s sports archives. It has sparked a broader realization: Haiti’s youth is ready to take an active role in shaping a new, more inclusive, peaceful, and just future.

Through their performance, dedication, and spirit of teamwork, the AFKF members and all tournament participants delivered a resounding message: there is still reason to believe in Haiti.

In a country too often portrayed through the lens of division and crisis, the young people of Cayes have shown another way forward — one built on solidarity, initiative, and the unshakable will to overcome adversity.
