President Biden Withdraws from 2024 Race Amidst Party Pressure, Endorses Vice President Harris as Democratic Nominee

President Joe Biden has announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place as the Democratic Party’s nominee. Biden, 81, faced mounting pressure from party allies who felt his unpopularity was detrimental to the Democratic ticket. This decision follows weeks of increasing calls from his party for him to step down.

In a statement, President Biden said he would end his campaign and support Vice President Harris’s presidential bid. Harris, confirming her intention to seek the nomination, declared, “Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.”

The announcement was made via a letter on X (formerly Twitter), where Biden expressed his decision to step aside for the 2024 election and endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee. This move came after numerous congressional Democrats urged the president to drop out following a lackluster debate performance against Republican challenger Donald Trump, 78. Despite earlier dismissals of such calls, Biden stated he plans to complete his current term in office. Meanwhile, Harris is starting to garner support from Democratic legislators, governors, and advocacy groups.

In a swift transition, the Biden campaign was rebranded as “Harris for President.” The campaign committee officially filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission at 4:51 PM EST to reflect the change. To utilize the campaign’s significant war chest, which totaled $95.9 million at the end of June, Harris must remain the Democratic nominee. Any shift to another candidate could present significant challenges.

However, Kamala Harris may soon face competition within her party. Joe Manchin, an independent senator from West Virginia, is considering re-registering as a Democrat and launching his campaign, according to CNN. Manchin, who left the Democratic Party to become an independent in May, has voiced concerns over the lack of space for centrists in the Senate, famously remarking, “This place sucks.”
