Haiti Urges UN to Accelerate Deployment of Gang Suppression Force

The Security Council convened following a deadly gang attack in Kenscoff, near Port-au-Prince, that reportedly killed dozens of people.

NEW YORK, August 28, 2026 — Haiti has called on the international community to accelerate the deployment of the Gang Suppression Force as armed groups continue to expand their operations and deepen the country’s security and humanitarian crises.

The United Nations Security Council met following a deadly gang assault in Kenscoff, a mountainous community near Port-au-Prince. The attack reportedly left dozens of people dead and renewed concerns about the ability of Haitian authorities to protect vulnerable communities.

During the meeting, the head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti and a senior humanitarian official presented a troubling assessment of conditions on the ground. They highlighted the growing influence of armed groups, mounting civilian casualties and the increasing difficulty of delivering humanitarian assistance.

Council members discussed the mandate and deployment of the Gang Suppression Force, stronger enforcement of the international arms embargo and Haiti’s uncertain political future.

Haiti’s ambassador to the United Nations, Pierre Ericq Pierre, emphasized the need for faster and better-coordinated international assistance. He urged Haiti’s partners to turn existing commitments into concrete action as the security situation continues to deteriorate.

Council members broadly agreed that international support for Haiti must be strengthened. However, questions remain about the force’s deployment schedule, resources and operational capacity.

Haitian officials maintain that security assistance must be accompanied by stronger institutions, humanitarian relief and a credible political process capable of restoring stability and preparing the country for elections.
