Italian Police Recover Renoir, Cézanne and Matisse Paintings Stolen in Three-Minute Museum Heist

PARMA, Italy — Italian authorities have recovered three valuable paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse months after thieves stole the artworks during a remarkably fast museum burglary.

The paintings, collectively valued by experts at more than $10 million, were located during a series of searches carried out in Parma and surrounding provinces, according to Italy’s Carabinieri art recovery unit.

Five suspects were detained in connection with the investigation. Authorities believe the individuals may be associated with an organized criminal group suspected of carrying out numerous burglaries targeting private homes, businesses and other properties.

Investigators also recovered additional stolen property estimated to be worth tens of thousands of euros.

Three Masterpieces Recovered

The recovered works include Paul Cézanne’s “Tasse et Plat de Cerises” (“Cup and Plate of Cherries”), Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s “Les Poissons” (“The Fish”) and Henri Matisse’s “Odalisque sur la Terrasse” (“Odalisque on the Terrace”).

The paintings disappeared from the Magnani Rocca Foundation, a private museum located roughly 12 miles outside the northern Italian city of Parma.

According to investigators, thieves targeted the museum during the night of March 22-23. They allegedly forced their way through an entrance and completed the theft in approximately three minutes.

Surveillance footage released by authorities reportedly shows the burglars moving rapidly through the museum before escaping with the paintings.

Investigation Leads Police to Suspects

Italy’s specialized art police worked with prosecutors to trace the stolen masterpieces and identify potential suspects. Searches authorized as part of the investigation eventually led authorities to the missing paintings.

The recovery represents a significant victory for Italy’s efforts to combat art theft and trafficking, particularly because internationally recognized works can quickly disappear into underground networks after being stolen.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the suspects and whether they may be connected to additional crimes.

For the Magnani Rocca Foundation, the recovery brings an extraordinary chapter to a close: three masterpieces taken in a matter of minutes have now been returned to the hands of Italian authorities.
