Haiti Has A New CP President

Port-au-Prince, October 7, 2024 — Leslie Voltaire was officially inaugurated as the new President of the Presidential Transition Council (CPT) on Monday, marking a significant shift in Haiti’s transition process. The ceremony occurred at Villa d’Accueil, where Voltaire assumed leadership from his predecessor, Edgard Leblanc Fils. Voltaire will lead the CPT until March 7, 2025, by the amended resolution from May 7, 2024, which mandates a rotating presidency.

Key figures attended the inauguration, including eight members of the CPT who signed the resolution, Acting Prime Minister Carlos Hercule, members of the Haitian government, and Rameau Normil, Acting Director General of the Haitian National Police (PNH). Also present were diplomatic and consular corps members, including former President Edgard Leblanc Fils, with notable absences. Leblanc distanced himself from the event just hours before, addressing the Nation with concerns about the involvement of three council members in the ongoing BNC scandal.

President Voltaire outlined the CPT’s priorities in his inaugural address: “I am proud to assume my responsibilities as President of the Transition Council. Our priority is clear: to restore security across the country. Immediate and decisive measures will be taken to protect every citizen. We are also committed to organizing transparent and inclusive elections to ensure a return to constitutional order. Let us remain united!”

Voltaire’s appointment was welcomed by many. Acting Prime Minister Carlos Hercule praised the new president, highlighting his integrity and vision. “Leslie Voltaire’s assumption of the CPT Presidency marks a pivotal moment for our country. A man of great culture and patriotic wisdom, he is a key figure who can guide Haiti toward reconciliation, both within and on the global stage. Security is our top priority, and we will tackle this challenge.”

The international community has also expressed its support for Voltaire’s leadership. The French Embassy in Haiti congratulated him, noting the presence of its chargé d’affaires at the ceremony. The U.S. Embassy echoed these sentiments: “The United States congratulates the CPT on its commitment to a peaceful transition of power.

We look forward to working with the CPT to build a better future for the Haitian people.”

Smith Augustin, who was notably excluded from this round of the rotating presidency, remained optimistic about the transition. “Together, we will work to overcome the challenges through true collegial leadership. This is a patriotic duty we must not fail. The success of the transition is paramount, and we will do everything to meet the expectations of the people and those who trust us. Justice will prevail.”

CPT Advisor Emmanuel Vertilaire also voiced his confidence in Voltaire’s leadership, stating, “I am convinced that Mr. Voltaire will bring a positive and sustainable dynamic to the CPT. I have full confidence in his ability to guide the country and the Presidential Advisors toward promising horizons and address the challenges with integrity and a strong sense of duty.”

As Haiti moves forward under Leslie Voltaire’s leadership, it focuses on restoring security and preparing for transparent elections, essential to returning the nation to constitutional order. The coming months will be critical as the CPT works to stabilize Haiti and set a course for a brighter future.
