Despite calls from hundreds of countries for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cease the killing of thousands of innocent people in Gaza, including women and children, his relentless campaign against Gaza persists without consequences. International criminal courts have found credible evidence suggesting that both Netanyahu and the leader of Hamas have violated international laws. Nonetheless, Netanyahu continues to push further into Rafah.

Days after international prosecutors sought arrest warrants for both leaders, an Israeli attack on the Rafah tent camp resulted in the deaths of 45 people, including women and children, and left hundreds more wounded. This atrocity has sparked a global outcry, yet Netanyahu dismissed the bombing of the army camps as a “colossal mistake.” The White House’s response was limited to urging Israel to “take every precaution possible to protect civilians.”

If Netanyahu ignores the U.S., Israel’s most prominent supporter, and provider of military aid, what are the next steps? The U.S. has called for more significant efforts to protect civilians but has stopped short of demanding an end to the Rafah incursion. With the Biden administration and the U.N. appearing powerless to intervene, the future looks bleak for the millions of women and children in Gaza.

Netanyahu’s apparent disregard for international laws and his U.S. counterparts is evident. Protests by U.S. college students seem more impactful than the actions of global political leaders, who appear powerless in this crisis. A miracle seems to be the only hope for ending this tragedy.

The Israeli strike, aimed at two senior Hamas leaders, has faced international condemnation. French President Emmanuel Macron labeled the strike an “outrage,” and E.U. foreign-policy chief Josep Borrell called for an immediate halt to Israeli attacks. The U.S. National Security Council recognized Israel’s right to target Hamas but stressed the necessity of protecting civilians.
