Haiti and Sri Lanka Seek Stronger Cooperation on Security, Peace and Global South Partnerships

Haitian Ambassador Jean Robert Pillard calls for deeper diplomatic cooperation as Colombo reaffirms support for peace and stability in Haiti

PRETORIA, South Africa — Haiti is seeking to strengthen its diplomatic relationship with Sri Lanka as part of a broader effort to expand cooperation with countries across the Global South, with security, peacebuilding and bilateral collaboration emerging as key areas of discussion.

Haiti’s ambassador to South Africa, Jean Robert Pillard, recently held a diplomatic meeting with Air Chief Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to South Africa.

The discussions provided an opportunity for the two representatives to review relations between their countries and explore areas where Port-au-Prince and Colombo could deepen cooperation.

Security and Peace at Center of Discussions

Security was among the major issues addressed during the meeting, particularly as Haiti continues to confront armed violence and instability that have placed enormous pressure on the country’s institutions and population.

The diplomats discussed regional and international security as well as broader efforts to promote peace and stability.

For Haiti, strengthening relationships with international partners remains particularly important as the country seeks additional diplomatic and security cooperation while working toward restoring effective governance and creating conditions for long-term stability.

The talks also reflected Haiti’s interest in developing stronger relationships beyond its traditional partners.

Haiti Looks Toward the Global South

Ambassador Pillard emphasized the importance of expanding Haiti’s engagement with nations of the Global South, a broad group that includes developing and emerging countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Closer cooperation with Sri Lanka could become part of that strategy.

Haiti and Sri Lanka share experiences as developing nations that have faced significant political, economic and social challenges. Both countries have also experienced periods of instability and have participated in international discussions concerning development, peace and security.

Expanding those diplomatic ties could eventually create opportunities for cooperation beyond security, including education, technical assistance, institutional development, trade and cultural exchanges.

Haiti Recognizes Sri Lanka’s Support

During the discussions, Pillard expressed Haiti’s appreciation for Sri Lanka’s participation in international efforts aimed at supporting peace and security in the Caribbean nation.

The Haitian diplomat highlighted the importance of international solidarity at a time when Haiti continues to face one of the most difficult security crises in its recent history.

Port-au-Prince has increasingly emphasized that restoring stability will require not only security assistance but also stronger institutions, economic development and sustained international cooperation.

Sri Lanka Reaffirms Solidarity With Haiti

Rajapaksa, meanwhile, reiterated Sri Lanka’s solidarity with the Haitian people and expressed continued support for initiatives intended to advance peace and stability.

The diplomatic exchange signals that both governments are interested in maintaining dialogue and identifying practical areas where their relationship could expand.

While no new bilateral agreement was announced following the meeting, the discussions could provide a foundation for additional diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

Haiti Seeks to Diversify International Partnerships

The meeting comes as Haiti seeks to broaden its diplomatic relationships and strengthen its presence within international institutions.

Building closer ties with countries in Africa and Asia could allow Haiti to diversify its partnerships while promoting greater South-South cooperation on issues such as security, economic development, climate resilience and institutional capacity.

For Haiti, such relationships could also provide additional diplomatic support in international forums where decisions affecting the country’s security, development and political future are debated.

The meeting between Pillard and Rajapaksa therefore represents more than a routine diplomatic courtesy. It reflects an effort by Port-au-Prince to expand Haiti’s international relationships while seeking new partners in the country’s pursuit of security, stability and sustainable development.

As discussions continue, peace, security and bilateral cooperation are expected to remain central pillars of the developing relationship between Haiti and Sri Lanka.
