Francoise Morailles: A Beacon of Integrity in Haiti’s Political Landscape

The Good Soldiers of Haiti – In the tranquil town of Jacmel, nestled in the southwest of Haiti, a figure of remarkable talent remains largely uncelebrated. Francoise Morailles, known to many as Commissaire Morailles, has made significant contributions as Jacmel’s Chief Prosecutor. Despite the constant political turmoil, she has maintained her dedication to advancing social justice and the rule of law.

A Reputation Built on Integrity and Professionalism

Our investigation into her career and influence revealed that Francoise Morailles is more than just a public servant—she is a woman of unwavering integrity and professionalism. Residents of Jacmel and members of the Haitian diaspora alike spoke highly of her dedication to justice. Her commitment was further highlighted by a harrowing event on November 29, 2016, when Morailles narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in the Cyvadier area, a notorious danger zone in Jacmel. This act of violence underscored the risks she faced in her pursuit of justice.

A Patriot Unwelcome in Her Land

One local, who wished to remain anonymous, described Maitre Francoise Morailles as a true patriot who deeply loves Haiti and deserves a prominent role in its political system. However, this patriotism comes with challenges. The local lamented that “Bon bagay yo sou ban,” implying that those who serve with integrity often find themselves sidelined. This sentiment is echoed in our series, “Where Are the Good Soldiers of Haiti?” where we honor Maitre Francoise Morailles as a “Good Soldier of Haiti.”

Standing Up for Justice, Even at Great Cost

During a Haitian Tribune investigation, we uncovered a significant incident involving Commissaire Morailles. While attempting to arrest a local lawyer associated with a powerful senator, she faced immense pressure to back down. Despite the warrant’s legitimacy, the lawyer claimed the arrest was unlawful due to his political connections. Maitre Morailles, however, stood firm, upholding the law despite the potential consequences. Her courage did not go unnoticed; shortly after, she was dismissed from her position—a decision many later admitted was politically motivated and unjust. However, she was later promoted to Deputy Government Commissioner at the Court of Appeal of Port-au-Prince. Francoise Morialles, to date, is still holding her position.

The Need for More Soldiers of Integrity

Establishing the rule of law in Haiti requires more individuals like Maitre Francoise Morailles—courageous, principled, and unwavering in their convictions. In a nation where political corruption often overshadows justice, figures like Morailles offer hope for a better future. That is why, as part of our ongoing series, “Where Are the Good Soldiers of Haiti?” we proudly feature Maitre Morailles of Jacmel. Her story is a testament to the difference one individual can make, and we remain committed to highlighting others who share her dedication to Haiti’s progress.

Please send us their name and location if you know of a “good soldier” in your community. We will investigate and potentially feature their story in our series, “Where Are the Good Soldiers of Haiti?”
